Winter tyres: what you need to know

Legal context in Belgium and neighbouring countries

In Belgium, winter tyres are not required by law. In countries like Germany and Austria, (situational) duty applies in winter conditions; if you are planning a ski trip or driving through such regions, you do need winter tyres.

Studded (studded) tyres are permitted in Belgium from 1 November to 31 March on vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes. If you use them, they must be fitted on all wheels (including trailers >500 kg). Max speed: 90 km/h on motorways/2×2 roads and 60 km/h on other roads.

Performance: why winter tyres in cold weather?

Winter tyres use a softer rubber compound and a lug tread. This provides grip in low temperatures, wet snow and icy mud. The 3PMSF pictogram (three-peak mountain + snowflake) indicates that the tyre passes a standardised snow test; M+S alone is insufficient as a quality guarantee. The EU tyre label also shows grades for rolling resistance (consumption), wet grip and external rolling noise, plus snow/ice icons and a QR code to the EPREL product specifications database.

When to change, what size and index?

Guideline: change when the temperature is around or below ~7°C for long periods and you regularly drive in cold/humid conditions. As a minimum, stick to the size, load index and speed index prescribed by the manufacturer (e.g. 205/55 R16 91V). For winter/all-season, the speed index may in some cases be lower than for summer tyres, provided it complies with regulations and has a clear speed sticker in view of the driver.

Depth, pressure and TPMS

Check tread depth and tyre pressure more often in winter. Pressure drops when cold; under-pressure prolongs braking distance. TPMS warning light indicates pressure loss - do not ignore it. European cars have TPMS as standard; recalibrate if necessary after a change (via on-board menu or garage).

Chains and EVs

Use snow chains only where permitted and when the road surface requires it (consult road signs/information per country). For EVs, the choice of winter tyre is crucial due to higher weight and torque; pay extra attention to load index and specific EV markings.

Practical buying tips

- Choose 3PMSF homologated winter tyres.
- Use the EU label to compare objectively (wet grip is an important safety indicator in Belgium).
- Get your set balanced and aligned; that will reduce wear and vibration.
- Consider rim set for quick season change.

Summer tyres

The unique rubber compound gives summer tyres a better grip on the road during warmer periods. Moreover, summer tyres wear less quickly than winter or all-season tyres during these periods. A summer tyre's coarser tread also increases grip at higher temperatures.

Winter tyres are not adapted to summer conditions. Continuing to drive on winter tyres in summer is less safe and more expensive. At higher temperatures, the rubber of winter tyres becomes too soft. This affects grip and increases wear. We therefore recommend fitting summer tyres from 15 March onwards.
