The size deciphered: 205/55 R16 91V (example)
- 205 = section width in mm
- 55 = height/width ratio in %
- R = radial construction
- 16 = rim diameter in inches
- 91 = load index (load capacity per tyre, 91 = 615 kg)
- V = speed index (max. permissible speed of the tyre)
Additional indications you often see:
- XL/REINFORCED: reinforced tyre with higher load capacity.
- RunFlat/ROF: limited further driving in case of pressure loss (within distance/speed).
- Outside/Inside or rotating arrow: mounting orientation.
DOT and production date
The DOT number includes a 4-digit code: week and year of production (e.g. 3923 = week 39 of 2023). Useful to check age when buying or seasonal change.
EU tyre label and winter pictograms
The current EU label shows classes for fuel efficiency (rolling resistance), wet grip and external rolling noise. For C1/C2/C3 tyres, it may also show 3PMSF (snow) and ice pictogram. The QR code takes you to EPREL with all official data and the product sheet.
M+S vs 3PMSF and speed index in winter
M+S (Mud & Snow) is a non-standardised designation; 3PMSF has been tested and does mean demonstrable snow performance. In winter/all-season, a lower speed index than your summer tyre may be permitted, depending on regulations and with speed sticker in sight. Get advice on this so you remain compliant with the manufacturer's and legal requirements.
Practical tip
Look not only at size, but also at load/speed index, purpose of use (EV/ICE), driving style and annual mileage. Any questions? Drop by Banden Claerhout in Avelgem or Olsene (Zulte); together we will read your current tyre data and recommend a suitable set.
